Team Garvey’s St. Mary’s (Kerry) 72 (40) (John Galvin 19, Tom Fleming 14, Declan Wall 12, Viktoras Velykis 10, Dan Griffin 9, Brian Clernon 6)
Blue Demons (Cork) 60 (22) (B O’Neill 23, C Sutton 10, S. McCarthy 9)
Team Garvey’s lined out on Saturday determined to add to the clubs and county tally for the weekend, this they did and they did it in style. Having seen wins on Friday night by their U18 squad and in the game prior to their by Mustang St. Paul’s they were not going to leave the cup behind.
They had a stormer of an opening quarter.  Tom Fleming and Declan Wall sinking threes while Dan Griffin, Viktoras Velykis and MVP John Galvin added basket after basket inside.  Demons Brian O’Neill kept the Lee side boys in touch with two big hits but they trailed by six at the end of the first.
Garvey’s built on their lead in the second period.  Tom Fleming was on fire and gave his finest performance to date this season. Galvin continued to upset things on the inside and Velykis was winning most rebounds at both ends.  Garvey’s netted 21 points to Demons nine and led by 18 at half time.
Demons made somewhat of a comeback in the third quarter with big threes from McGowan, and McCarthy but still only reduced the gap by three points. Captain Declan Wall along with Fleming continued to match the threes while Griffin and Velykis kept the scores coming inside.
A 15 point lead at the start of the final quarter allowed Garvey’s to focus rather than panic as the clock ran down on what was the biggest game of their lives. Player coach Brian Clernon was an inspiration for the side when he came on, his knowledge of Demons and his super league experience was evident. While Christy Sutton and Brian O’Neill fought hard to make a comeback in this final quarter team Garvey’s were not for a minute going to let it happen. They gave it their all to the end and despite losing some players who were on foul trouble they held on to win comfortable by 12 much to the delight of the screaming fans.  “The peoples’ man” Maurice Casey headed straight for his fans that lifted him into the air and brought him back out to the court so he could collect his first ever senior cup medal along with the rest of the popular team.
