Team Garvey’s retain National League title.
Team Garvey’s retained the national league title last weekend in the national basketball arena in Tallaght in what was yet another dramatic and thrilling game. Just 12 months previous Garvey’s had stolen the game in the dying seconds from the Galway side when Dan Griffin secured a basket with just seconds to go in the game.  This year it was not all that different. Titans had started strong hitting basket after basket while Garvey’s could not find their target. With just over six minutes gone in the first quarter the Galway side led 21 to seven much to the dismay of the huge numbers of supporters who had travelled from Castleisland. John Teahan had sunk a three for St. Mary’s two minutes into the game and John Galvin had followed with two baskets but for the next four minutes little else fell. MacMichael nailed three threes for his side and Paul Freeman was on fire in the early stages but with just 3.39 remaining the tables turned, John Teahan sunk his second three of the game and went on go give a spectacular display making another 10 points before the end of the quarter, Declan Wall also contributed and John Galvin won every possible rebound to bring Garvey’s within four points of an astonished Titans by the end of the quarter.
Having left it behind last year Titans were not about to give in easily and they started the second period in a similar fashion to the first. Freeman and MacMichael widened the gap while Garvey’s failed to score for three minutes. John Gavin, Declan Culhane and Declan Wall got it back on track and once again John Teahan went on a late scoring spree making scores from both the free throw line and from play. Declan Wall made several steals to keep Garvey’s in touch but a basket from Paul Freeman saw Titans take the quarter and Team Garvey’s trailed 37 to 42 at the half time interval.
Sedebskis and Galvin traded early third quarter baskets, Titans briefly widened the gap to seven but Galvin’s accuracy form the free throw line and big scores from both Teahan and Wall during this quarter were all instrumental in seeing the St. Mary’s lads take the lead for the first time. Brian Clernon, Declan Wall and John Teahan all made great steals and a John Galvin basket with 12 seconds remaining pushed Team Garvey’s 61 to 60 ahead at the end of the quarter.
Paul Freeman, who was Garvey’s biggest threat on the day stepped up at the start of the final period and levelled from the free throw line, Titans had three players on four fouls from the end of the third while Team Garvey’s did not have any player with more than two at this point. Baskets were traded as the quarter went on and little separated the sides. John Galvin continued to dominate the boards, Declan Wall and John Teahan continued to register scores. The sides were level with 6.02 to play when Conall MacMichael made a score on the shot clock to put the Galway side ahead again but hot shot on the day, John Teahan responded with style, Garcia hit back for Titans, Galvin levelled for St. Mary’s. Teahan and Wall made it 74 for Garvey’s while Glenn Hynes hit two from the free throw line to put Titans at 72. Galvin and Freeman both made scores from the line as the clock ran down. Andrew Fitzgerald pushed Garvey’s to 78 while Hynes made one from two to leave just three points between the sides with 1.08 to play. The atmosphere in the Arena was electric. Galvin to the line again, he made both with 38 seconds to go,  Paul Freeman scored to bring Titans to 77 but both John Teahan and Declan Wall went to the line as the clock ran down ensuring that the division title remained in the Island.
