St Marys added two more cups to their collection last Sunday in the Presentation Hall Killarney when the U16 and the U14 girls won the cup final adding to the U12 girls cup won previously in January.

In the U16 match the league’s top two teams went head to head when St Marys took on Limerick Celtics in this cup final.  St Marys started the game strong and were 13-6 up at the end of the first quarter with Denise Dunlea hitting two 3 pointers and 4 inside shots.  In the second quarter St Marys continued their dominance with more players coming to the fore as Roisin Casey, Niamh O Sullivan, Jane Lynch, Aisling O Connell, Derval Sheehy & Amy Reidy all playing their part scoring 17 and keep Limerick Celtics scoreless leaving the sides 30-6 at half time.  The third quarter saw Limerick Celtics come rallying back into the game and put up a spirited fight and won the quarter scoring 18 points to St Marys 12.  Both teams had now introduced players from the bench.  In the 4th quarter St Marys came roaring back into the game led by their captain Amy Reidy who was controlling her players and driving them forward.  The last basket in the game was scored by Jane Lynch who worked tirelessly throughout for her team.  An outstanding contribution by Denise Dunlea who clocked up 28 points and who was in this writer’s opinion the most valuable player.  Overall St Marys man to man defence was outstanding all players contributed to a great team performance.  Limerick Celtics have to be commended for the sporting manner in which they played the game.  The game was well officiated by Tom Lynch & Aisling Scanlon.  Congratulations to the girls and to their coach Denny Porter who has put a huge amount of time and effort into the development of this team.
Final Score St Marys 60 Limerick Celtics 34.
Denise Dunlea 28, Roisin Casey 8, Amy Reidy 8, Niamh O Sullivan 7, Aisling O Connell 6, Jane Lynch 4.

Next up saw St Marys U14 girls take on Tralee Imperials.  These same girls had met in the cup final two years previously where Michaela Aherns on the buzzer basket saw St Marys claim the title by a single point.  Tralee Imperials started strong with Maeve Carmody causing St Marys defense problems with her strong offensive skill and St Marys found themselves 4-0 down after five minutes of play.  However St Marys settled and with some good defensive work by Aoife O Connor and Shauna O Connor driving on the team they finished the quarter 6-4 down with Shauna O Connor and Orla O Connor adding the scores for St Marys.  The second quarter saw St Marys dominate with outstanding performances by Andrea Murphy and Leanne O Connor who put 14 points on the board between them.  Katie Reidy playing strong defensive and rebounding well for her side.  A layup by Lauren Hickey saw St Marys finishing the quarter on 16 to a lone basket by Imperials leaving the sides 20-8 apart at half time. The third quarter saw both sides push each other to the limit.  Maeve Carmody and Andrea Murphy, two extremely talented girls each driving their team on and continuously swapping baskets at each side it seemed this pair were unstoppable.  Some strong rebounding and defense work by Michaela Ahern, Therese Healy and Orla O Connor saw St Marys maintaining their lead and again outscored Imperial 10-6 leaving Imperials trailing 30-14 at the start of the 4th quarter.  St Marys weren’t going to let this one behind them and again Aoife O Connors defense in this quarter was outstanding with Shauna O Connor and Michaela Ahern contributing at the other end.  Emily Broderick worked hard under the boards in this quarter.  Outstanding performances on the day by all the girls with Andrea Murphy, Orla O Connor, Leanne O Connor & Maeve Carmody shining at the top.  Congratulations to all the girls who worked hard to bring the cup back to Castleisland and to their coaches Joanne Downey & Joanne Walmsley.  The game was officiated by Julie Stack & Christina Bartlett who were never going to have an easy job on their hands as none of these teams would settle for defeat.
