St Marys U12 girls secured another title last Saturday in Tralee when they took part in the Kerry Area Basketball Board Open Tournament.  This tournament hosted yearly by the board features top clubs in the country and again the talent at this years competition was exceptional.

St Marys had three group games and kicked off the tournament against Limerick Celtics who they had met two weeks previously in a thrilling cup final.  St Marys started the game well with their strong defensive and accurate free throw shooting saw them 17-10 ahead at half time.  St Marys finished the game strong on a scoreline of 31-20.
The next game saw them take on Templogue of Dublin where again they were in the lead at half time on a scoreline of 11-8.  St Marys had a better second half and ran out winners
21-12.  Their third game saw them take on Ballincollig of Cork and a win here secured their place in the semi final.

In the semi final St Marys met Fr Matthews of Cork.  Fr Matthews had been very impressive in their group games and were also group winners after seeing off St Josephs, Tralee Imperials & Maree of Galway.   The sides were evenly matched in the 1st quarter with St Marys scoring 6 Sarah O Sullivan adding 4 and Maebh Young contributing 2 to Fr Matthews 4.  St Marys had an impressive 2nd quarter where they pushed ahead scoring 8 unanswered points Nicole Downey adding 4, Labhaoise Walmsley 2 and a fine steal by Brid Moriarty finishing in a strong lay up, while they also kept Fr Matthews scoreless leaving the score 14-4 at half time.  St Marys kept their cool as Fr Matthews fought hard to get back into the game but St Marys ticked over and ran out winners on a scoreline of 19-14 leaving them facing Brunell in the final.

However Brunell suffered an injury in their semi final against Limerick Celtics and had only travelled with 10 players so had to forfeit the final.  Unfortunately they decided not to play the game and St Marys were automatic winners.  Congratulations to this fantastic St Marys team who all contributed hugely to the win.  Stand out performances came from Sarah O Sullivan, Julieanne O Connor, Nicole Downey & Labhaoise Walmsley.

Joint captains Sarah O Sullivan & Siobhan Collins accepted the trophy from Chairman Pa Carey on behalf of the team.  Congratulations to the Kerry Area Board on a well run and successful tournament.
