Team Garvey’s John Teahan is named Basketball Ireland senior player of the year.

John Teahan has been named as the 2010/11 Basketball Ireland Senior Player of the year.  He was presented with his trophy at an award ceremony in the National Basketball Arena on Saturday last. John, who is admired for his ability and skill and loved for his unassuming attitude adds this title to a long list of achievements in his basketball career.

John started with St. Mary’s basketball club Castleisland. He transferred to Tralee Tigers where he had a fruitful super league career. He won two S.L. cup titles, three Superleague titles and a top eight.  He was superleague player of the year in 2002 which is an outstanding achievement in itself. During this time John was also an Irish International and has 20 international senior caps. Earlier this year he added a division one league title to his list and picked up MVP for his outstanding performance in the division men’s National League final. One of his personal favourite achievements is his win in the Nike Dunking competition in 1996.  Nike did a European tour and John scooped the Dublin section.

He rejoined St. Mary’s last season and was huge asset to the team.  John’s strength and skill, accuracy from the free throw line along with his ability to shoot from outside all made him a force to be reckoned with. John scored a total of 297 points for Team Garvey’s last season averaging 16 points per game. In one particular league game in the Mardyke arena earlier this year he opened the fourth quarter by hitting the first four scores which totalled 10 points before the opposition got an opportunity to respond. He finished this game with 23 personal points, his second time scoring this amount this season however as it would later be seen 23 points was not the high point of his season.

In 1997 he met and was caddy for his hero Michael Jordon when Jordon played Ballybunion Golf course. In 2003 at the age of 39 Jordon had hit 41 points when playing the Indiana Pacers.   In this seasons dramatic league final Teahan came back time after time on scoring sprees late in each quarter just as the opposition thought they had widened the gap to a comfortable margin. His accuracy from the free throw line at a crucial point in the game was instrumental in the league win.  Like Jordon, John hit 41 points in this game at the age of 39!
Some of the tributes received by fellow players and friends after the final include: “My God you were amazing” “Some Performance”, “So happy for you” and “John, you were magnificent”

Known and loved countrywide, John is considered to be a great ambassador for the sport by all and sundry. When asked how he felt about being named senior player of the year he shyly responded “Delighted to come back to St. Mary’s, the club I started with and win this award, especially at my age!
